bad tech symmetry

I lost my desktop during Harvey flood. I transferred purchased songs from my IPOD to a new laptop. I went on ITUNES and purchased more songs. The new purchased songs show up on a playlist separate from my old purchased songs. It will not let me sync my new purchased songs on my old IPOD. It has been authorized and home sharing has been checked. It asks to place them on my old device but does not carry through. What gives?
