can't delete emails on iPad

I am unable to delete emails on my iPad.  When I swipe my finger to the right on an email message in my inbox, the only option is to "archive" the message.  When I click on edit, the only options when I check a box is to "archive" or "move".  How do I delete an email?

I'm assuming it's a Gmail account, in which case you can turn it into Delete instead of Archive via Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Gmail Account > Archive Messages set to 'off'

I have the same problem, however, when I followed your instructions, I no longer have the option to archive or delete the message. I have this capability on my iphone (swipe one way and you get to delete, swipe the other way and you get read/unread, flag, or archive). Is this not possible on the iPad?
