Why did Folder disappear from iMac?

A significant  folder just disappeared  from my elderly uncle's 5 year old iMac with fusion drive. Was there on Sunday, but Uncle could not find it on Tuesday and it no longer was listed in the side bar in Finder view

Running Mac OS 10.12.6 (Sierra)

Additionally, some zipped folders appeared on his desktop (uncle knows nothing about  compression  AND several seemingly correctly named  desktop folders now all have identical files none of which fit the folder's topic  ( as per the folder name)

What is this?

I used Disk Utility, booting from the recovery drive.

I then used Disk Warrior version 5 which rebuilt a  flawed Directory

The lost very important folder did not re appear

I then did a rapid scan with ProSoft's Data Rescue and still have not found the folder  (which was not in the trash

I plan to use the full scale recovery program from Data Rescue

Ruling out human error (uncle is the only one  using the computer and THIS folder he would never move, remove or trash.) What could this be? is Drive failure pending? And any other way to retrieve this all important folder?

A folder with subfolders disappeared, this past Sunday, from the iMac

The folder is not in any Time Machine Backup

It is not in iCloud

Just gone....

very perplexed that there is no trace of the folder or subfolders

Has anything like this happened to any other user?
