Unusual problem with external disk

Hello

 

I use various logic libraries (and others) stored on an external disk, no problems. For live work I have stored (copies of) the files I need locally, so I do not have to take my external with me. However I have discovered, since upgrading to logic X, logic behaves unpredictably when the external is not plugged in! (things like not being able to use certain key commands) I don't think I have anything on the external besides plugins and libraries. Any ideas what could be going on?

OS X 10.12.5 Macbook pro quad 2.6
