21.5" inch iMac making whirring noise? Bad or N...

This is my second iMac that I have gone through (my first having completely destroyed itself in less than 3 months). My iMac runs completely fine on this second one but it is making an odd whirring noise, almost like a light moan.

Its not horribly loud, if I'm playing music on the iMac I can't hear it at all. Its only in a silent room that I can notice it very well.

I took it into the Apple Store here and town and they replaced the harddrive but the noise insists. When I explained to them about the noise before the harddrive was replaced, they said they didn't hear anything like it/ said it was the harddrive thinking. I know what the "harddrive thinking" noise sounds like, and this is definitely not it.

Suggestions? I don't want another computer to go capoot.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

Are you sure what you are hearing isn't the internal fan? Does the sound increase when you do heavier tasks like run big programs that use a lot of cpu time?

Fan behavior varies a lot with iMacs and the way they are used...that may be why the Apple staff did not hear what you were talking about...they may have thought it was normal fan noise.

The noise starts immediately when the computer starts up and even when no programs are running. Its just one continuous constant whirring noise from start up to shut down.

That sure doesn't sound like the fan in mine, runs up and down and at times can not hear a thing.

You never hear a change in the sound?

Nope. Doesn't speed up, doesn't get louder or ever take pauses. I only assume its nothing since the Apple guys didn't take note of anything and the harddrive is brand new.

But no one ever likes weird noises on their computers...

I agree, it is never very comforting to have unexplained noises. But since the only times I have used one of the new iMacs there was a lot of background noise, I really can't saw what is normal or abnormal in the noise department.

Since it is a new unit it should be under warranty...use it and keep an eye on it, but don't obsess about it. See how it performs and if it seems to start going weird on you, ask again.

Yep I think that is what comes down to it, waiting and seeing. As frustrated as I am that I'm on my second iMac and even this one is giving me a bit of a headache, I am thankful for the year warranty, hasn't cost me anything so far

Hello,

I have the same iMac and I constantly hear some kind of a high frequency noise. I couldn't hear it when it is loud or the music is playing - only in the quiet room.

I've brought my iMac to the Apple service - the guy told me, that he couldn't hear anything and anyway all computers make these kinds of noise (I doubt it).

So, if you find a solution, please let me know.

I also have this problem. For 2 years my imac was blissfully silent and now there is a constant low hum (whirring noise). I tried resetting the SMC as per an Apple document regarding the fan being a full speed but it did not fix the problem.

I've been struggling for at least a couple of months regarding an upcoming decision to purchase an iMac for VOs.I too have read the horror stories and seen the YT videos which make a case for fan/hard drive noise levels.i love the look and feel of the 21.5 iMac but don't want to shell out big bucks only to find I can't record in the manner to which I've grown accustomed (mic- in my version of the Harlan Hogan foamed box- 1 1/2 feet from monitor and about 1' above the very quiet PC tower). Technically speaking,I am a neophyte. Give me a mic, simple recording software and a quiet environment and i'm fine. Ask me what's in my pC at the moment-I'd have to look it up for you. Is iMac noise the result of processor type,RAM or something else? Would I be better off getting a Mac mini for my noise concerns? Would anyone consider these iMac specs overkill? Would running relatively small recording programs like Audacity or Twisted Wave cause the sysytem to make noise?

This may not be the exact noise you are talking about but with my last iMac I had a higher pitch noise only audible when the room was quiet. It turned out to be the screen. When the brightness was all the way up or all the way down the noise went away. When the brightness was anywhere in the middle setting you would get the high pitch noise. Might be worth checking out. I found it to be very annoying.

My 27 inch is the exact way, just a constant hum sort of, only goes away if I shut it down.

My computer had the exact same problem its not the compter thinking the apple guys really didnt know what it was it sounds like some kind of high frequenzy noise that wont go out until the computer turns off anyway what i did to solve the problem ? i bought a power managment kit from best buy and from what i was told if you have a bunch of electronics in the same area they tend to emmit high static and on tvs/ computers it sometimes produces a buzzing noise that is very anoying when your electronics are on i dont know if theres truth to it but i can say i havent been hearing anything since

Shutdown the computer. Unplug the computer from the power saver/jack and instead, plug the computer directly into the wall/electrical source. The whirring totally stopped.
