IPad locked in lost mode, but it's not lost.

My Apple ID was hacked last night and both my IPhone and my IPad were put into lost mode, with an email address coming up on the home screen for my to email to get a passcode. I have not done this as I am sure this is a scam and I have reset my apple ID password, my IPhone is now working.

My IPad however is still locked in lost mode. I have called Apple this morning and they told me to go to ICloud.com, take it out of lost mode and then update and restore it through ITunes. Whenever I go to unlock my IPad it asks for a 6 digit passcode. I have never had a passcode on my IPad.

I have been trying this for the past 4 hours. I take it off lost mode but it says it is still locked. I have held down both the home and power button until the ITunes logo comes up and have tried updating and restoring several times through ITunes but a warning come up saying they cannot connect to IPad because it is in lost mode.  It is a continuous circle.

Can someone please help me?

Since you never had a screen lock passcode on the iPad, whomever got hold of your AppleID password had to set a code when they put it in lost mode.

Now that you have control of your AppleID back (and hopefully use two factor authentication from now on as well) the only way to clear that code will be to restore it in iTunes.  With it now deleted from your iCloud account, you can restore it as new and set it up fresh, or use your backup.

You may need to force it into recovery mode to restore it - see If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support and use those instructions to restore the iPad and reset the passcode.
