Apple Watch useless without iPhone?

I'm thinking about switching to Android and everything is pretty much okay for me except for one big problem: my Apple Watch will not work with Android (big surprise.) I'm concerned about what I will be able to do with the watch should I get an Android phone. I don't know if I can somehow find a way around it and somehow connect with Android (specifically the Google Pixel 2 by the way), or just give it to a friend or sell it, which I would rather not do. It's either 1. Get an iPhone X instead / 2. Get an Android phone and find any possible way to connect w/ Android. If anyone can find a solution then that is appreciated.

The  Watch is a extension of the iPhone. Without the phone, it's not good for much at all. If you want a smart-watch that works as a standalone device, the  Watch is not what you want. There is no way to connect it to an Android device.
