Transferring files to new imac

Friends,

I have a four year-old imac with a 3TB fusion drive. I'm planning on replacing it with a new imac with a 512GB SSD, and using external drives to store my data/files. I presume that I can begin off-loading my files to the externals from my old machine, and then when I get the new machine, download my various programs, connect the externals, and I'm good to go.

Is that correct? Am I missing anything?

Thanks!

Steve

The easiest way to accomplish this is to use Migration Assistant either from your old Mac, or from a Time Machine backup or clone.

Thanks, but is there any downside to manually copying my files to the external drive now and working from that drive on my current machine. Then, when I get the new machine, simply unplugging the external from the current machine and attaching it to the new machine?

Do you mean cloning the drive and working from that?
