This message may not have been sent by...

If a message doesn't have authentication data to confirm it was sent through Gmail, we'll warn you to protect your information.

Why the warning message shows up

You'll see this warning if a sender looks like name@gmail.com, but we can't verify that the email is actually coming from that Gmail account.

This can happen if the sender:

  • Is sending from a fake Gmail account
  • Emailed you from a website (for example, to share a news article)
  • Sent an email that was automatically forwarded (for example, from your school account to your personal Gmail)

Option 1: The message seems suspicious

If you aren't sure the message was sent by the Gmail address you see, follow these steps.

  1. In the warning message, click Report phishing.
  2. Do not provide any personal information or click any links in the email.

Option 2: The message is from a trusted sender

If you know a sender is legitimate, you can remove the warning from their messages in the future.

Remove the warning from one sender at a time
  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. Next to Search Search, click the Down arrow Down Arrow.
  3. In the "From" field, type the sender's email address.
  4. In the bottom right, click Create filter with this search.
  5. Check Never send it to Spam.
  6. Click Create filter.
