Photos.
Hi! I am getting ready to import my photos via the cord to my MacBook. I want those downloaded so they will not get deleted.
I just wondered if I could also use iCloud for my photos or is it just one or the other? That way they would be downloaded to my computer but also backed up in the cloud. Also, which one should I do first?
Should I import to my MacBook via cord or turn my cloud on? It is a new to me Mac and I haven't done either yet.
Thanks!

Thanks for sharing the articles. I just read them. I'm still unclear on how to store the photos permanently on my MacBook vs the cloud.
If I delete photos off of my phone I understand that deletes them off the cloud but I would like to clear up space on my phone by deleting some pics and have them backed up on munder MacBook.
iCloud Photo Library syncs everything to everything. iCPL is not a storage/backup solution. It is intended that you keep a full-resolution copy of your entire library on your computer. You can limit the amount of storage utilized on your iDevice by selecting to Optimize your local library.
iMore has a very detailed, well illustrated article on iCloud Photo Library. It’s a bit out of date, but the concepts behind iCPL have not changed.

I have the optimize storage box checked on my phone and it still says I am using 70 gb of storage?? Do you know why?
You can basically use iCloud for photo storage in two ways, and as you can imagine, there are advantages and disadvantages of both:
- Use iCloud's iCloud Photo Library, or
- Copy photos directly to your iCloud Drive.
Now that you read the articles, you can better understand how iCloud Photo Library works. It would best be thought of as a photo syncing tool as opposed to a photo storage tool. If you delete photos on a device, those photos would be also deleted from the iCloud Photo Library.
In the second option, you would copy or move photos from your devices to your iCloud drive. You can easily create folders on this drive just like you do on your Mac to store them in. How many you can store will be limited by your iCloud Storage Plan which starts with 5 GBs for free.
