copy contents of ipod to pc in order to synch

I've seen a few bits about this online but i'm struggling to come up with a definitive answer.

I have a number of songs on my ipod (nothing massive, about 500)

I also have a number of cds

Basically, I want to get all the songs on my cds onto my ipod

So (I think)

Firstly, I want to synch my ipod with itunes

Then I want to copy my cds ti itunes

Then I want to synch from itunes back to my ipod

Such that I could even synch to my ipad or ihone if required

Also, itunes will then be my baseline to synch from so I now download tunes or copy from CD to here and synch

Any ideas how I go about this

I've tries a few things

When I try and copy from my ipod it seems to give them 4 character names that mean nothing

Got to admit, I was sold the idea that Apple makes things easy

Not really my experience when you want to introduce a non-apple product

I do not have a MAC!
