Managing books between macOS and iTunes 12.7

Now that iTunes 12.7 no longer includes a Books category, how does one handle transfer of iBooks items - and especially PDFs of one's own (not items purchased from Apple) - between a macOS computer and an iOS device?

The Apple support page Changes in the new iTunes - Apple Support discusses managing Books on iTunes for Windows but nothing about macOS.

Enable: iCloud > iCloud Drive > iBooks on your devices and Mac. Files from iBooks on Mac are synced to your iCloud account, then are listed on your devices. To download them to local storage on the device, tap on the cloud icon.

Use iCloud Drive or iBooks to access your PDF files, ePub files, and books - Apple Support

I don't understand the part of your reply about "To download them to local storage....". The PDFs originated in some folder on my Mac, and I added them to iBooks there. (And then I can see them in iBooks on iPad, presumably through iCloud.)

  1. Where, if at all does iBooks by default store such PDFs on the Mac?
  2. When you say "tap on the cloud icon" to download the PDFs on my Mac, what cloud icon do you refer to? I don't see any cloud icon in iBooks on my Mac.
