Setting up Time Machine on External HD.

I have my external hard drive connected to my Netgear router and am able to access it from my laptop to drop files into.  However I wanted to set up Time Machine and keep getting the same issue.  I type in correct backup disk credentials, but once I click "use disk" it takes me back to the disk selection screen.
