Macbook Pro with Touch Bar
Dear All,
I have a 2016 13" MacBook Pro with touch bar (8gb/256gb) and I just noticed that my battery isn't charging anymore while plugged in. It just says "battery is not charging / power source: power adapter". I already tried resetting the SMC controller, plugging into different socket, leaving the charger unplugged for several minutes before plugging in again, restarting, shutting down etc, but nothing has helped so far. Anyone has any ideas? coconut battery indicates cycle count as 7, my macbook pro is 27 days old...
Any ideas? All assistance would be appreciated.

Reset the SMC. Had the same problem with my MBP 13" with touch bar two days ago.
With the Mac turned off (mine was dead!) :
- Plug in the power adapter (you probably won't hear the charging sound).
- On the built-in keyboard, press the Shift, Control, and Option keys on the left side at the same time and then press once the power button (without releasing the others).
- Release all three keys at the same time.
- Press the power button again.
- DONE !
This did not help, as I already wrote in my original post.
If anyone is having the same problem, know that your laptop is faulty. I brought the not-charging MacBook Pro with Touch Bar to an authorised service centre, they classed it as meeting requirements for Dead on Arrival, and I received a new MBP.
Didn't read that.
Good to hear that the problem was solved fast.
I had the same issue. Did all the trouble shooting as described above. Took it back and when they plugged it in their charger, it was charging. Replaced their power block with mine and it worked. Looks like it was the usb-c cable of all things. At any rate, I'm up and running with my touch bar MBP.
Glad you got a new one!
I'm still waiting for Apple to do something at all (it's been at a local authorised service partner for two weeks, with the issue escalated to Apple). The service center's first similar cases were resolved pretty fast with replacement units, but all current cases are just stalled. As they don't get any answers from Apple, they suspect Apple doesn't know how to handle the increased volume of problems. Or they are waiting for tools and spare parts to become available. Either way, they're silent, making me and others pretty frustrated customers.
I've done some searching, but it's hard to get an overview how common serious hardware problems are on the new MBP. So far, other than battery and graphics issues (mostly fixed in software?), it's under the radar of the major Mac news outlets. Let's hope it is limited...
I have had three separate MacBook Pro 13' Touch bar computers in the past month and I have had charging issues on all three computers. I have returned two computers thinking it was a faulty computer, but it has happened three times. The only solution is to have a 2nd power adapter and then switch between the two. It will start charging when you attached the second power adapter but then if it is asleep for a while, you will need to switch the power adapter again for it to charge. This is a major issue with the MacBook Pro 13' Touch bar and USB-C charging.
Same thing happed to me.
Reset did not work and when I took it back to Apple Store they couldn't figure it out and ordering new one for me.
Mine was ustom ordered with 16G Ram & 1T SSD I have to wait up to 10 days.
I will get extended warranty this time.
They exchanged mine. I'm on my 2nd one. it is doing the same thing... Not all the time. it's intermittent. When it does happen, it's weird. one night I plugged it in, went to bed & it was completely DEAD! Not only did not charge but also used up the battery life that was left. happened again today.
Hey guys, thought I would chime in here as I have the same issue and seemed to have figured out the cause of mine. It's 3rd party apps that seem to be the cause for me. I would advise closing or force quitting all apps that are running and see if it doesn't start charging again. I was doing countless SMC and PRAM resets to no avail when on a whim I tried that and now it charges fine. You can even reopen those apps once it starts charging and not have a problem for a while. When you close the app causing the trouble, it will immediately switch to charging so you can narrow it down first time. It seems to be a software issue so hopefully they fix it. The 2 apps that have given me problems were Chroma a hue lighting control app and steam. Chroma is easy to close but steam must be closed via force quit. In case you aren't aware the key combo command+option+escape will open the force quit window. I hope this helps everyone! I'd rather avoid a 1 hour drive to the closest apple store and being a week or more without a laptop and hold out hope this is fixed via software update.
Update: Looks like that was only a temporary fix as the problem returned the next day and closing 3rd party apps didn't help. I tried buying a new power adapter and updating to the latest beta and still no luck. I wound up bringing it to the apple store and they said the ones they've had in for the same issue were all due to faulty batteries. I guess Apple isn't making the batteries available so a warranty replacement seems to be the only option. I'm kind of disappointed especially when I see some threads where people are on their 3rd one and still having the same issue. I bought the highest configuration model so I'm worried about turnaround time as well. I will update on turnaround time and if the issue returns.
It is not 3rd party software issue - may be in your case...
but.. it is power/battery problem and 2nd adapter wasn't helping me in my case.
Apple Store tried their adapter & USB C cable on mine and that didn't solve my problem.
Mine is intermittent as well. Same thing happened to me - woke up to dead battery.
Went to Apple Store and was told to reinstall OS X and restore Time Machine backup. Genius said "some software can tax the system" - which didn't sound very "genius" to me. Sounds like that would be serious design flaw.
That notwithstanding, OS reinstall didn't work, SMC reset didn't work, and PRAM reset didn't work.
What was your resolution?
I also just started seeing this today with my 13" 2016 Pro w/ Touchbar after starting my workday. Went to the Apple Store and made an appointment for later today. I really hate that they offer absolutely *zero* assistance without an appointment. Since I really needed to get some work done I went ahead and unplugged one of their 15"s and plugged it in. No luck. Decided to try an SMC reset while there. That (at least for now) seems to have done the trick. Still going to drop by the store for my appointment to have them run their diagnostic check to see if anything shows up. I travel *a lot* and I really don't want to be stranded someplace without any hope for getting this thing service. Sadly, I suspect that's what will happen.
This MacBook is a serious letdown. The touchbar is a gimmick. I've reverted to just permanently setting essentially the same keys as before. It's funny, but when I use my Magic Keyboard I genuinely miss those physical keys. Speaking of keys, sounds like the keyboard will eventually have issues. And now the battery to boot. Apple used to be the perfect blend of form with function. Now they're entirely form over function (a la gimmicks).
Had the same problem with MacBook Pro 15, yesterday I bought it in Dubai Apple Store and today it stoped charging,
today changed with new one.
I am so disappointed!!
