Choose whether to show images
When you get a message that has a picture in it, you see the picture automatically. If you have a slow internet connection or want to save mobile data, you can change your setting so you can decide each time if you want to see the pictures.
Choose to show or not show images
- Open Gmail.
- In the top right, click Settings
.
- Click Settings.
- Scroll down to the "Images" section.
- Select Always display external images or Ask before displaying external images. If you chose the "Ask before displaying external images" setting, messages that have images will have a "Display images below" option.
- At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
Note: If Gmail thinks a sender or message is suspicious, you won’t see images automatically. Instead, you'll be asked if you want to see the image.
How Gmail helps make images safe
To help load images safely, images go through Google's image proxy servers and are transcoded before they're delivered.
This makes images safer because:
- Senders can’t use image loading to get information like your IP address or location.
- Senders can’t use the image to set or read cookies in your browser.
- Gmail checks the images for known viruses or malware.
In some cases, senders may be able to know whether you've opened an email that has an image attached to a unique link. Gmail scans every message for suspicious content, and if Gmail considers a sender or message potentially suspicious, images won’t be shown and you’ll be asked whether you want to see the images.
