Macbook Air 2012 battery problem

The charging cable at the point of contact to my MacBook Air 13" mid-2012 model did not show the power input light. The main screen indicated there was no battery attached. I let the battery go flat and then re-attached the charger and everything went back to normal. What could be the problem and what steps do I need to take to prevent recurrence?

My MacBook is a 13' 2012 model and with OSX 10.12.6
