Unexpected restart when Ethernet cable connected

iMac 21.5" Late 2015

macOS Sierra 10.12.5

  1. iMac works fine when on Wi-Fi with Ethernet cable disconnected
  2. iMac works fine with Ethernet cable connected in Safe Boot mode
  3. iMac works fine with Ethernet cable connected when booted from an external Thunderbolt drive running 10.12.5
  4. When booted normally, however, with Ethernet cable connected, iMac will reach login screen, but will spontaneously restart (often before having the chance to enter user password)

The first part of the subsequent crash report reads like this

*** Panic Report ***

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801cdbc7af): "m_free: freeing an already freed mbuf"@/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-3789.60.24/bsd/kern/uipc_mb uf.c:3553

Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Address

  • User "Login Items" have been removed
  • Sierra has been reinstalled
  • Apple Support hasn't worked it out just yet

Post the complete panic report.

I'm finally ready to tackle this problem again but it seems to have resolved itself.

If the problem reoccurs I'll repost the complete panic report.
