Thunderbolt 3 (USB

I'm trying to connect my Macbook to my iMac using it as target display. I found several articles including in Apple forums (Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support) that describes the ways to do it.

I went ahead and got myself the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter from the apple store, and rushed back home just to discover that it doesn't work.

I thought my iMac was not part of the compatibility range stated by Apple but it is (mine is a Mid-2011 with macOS High-Serra)

However, I noticed that whenever I plug the adapter the Macbook, it gives me an error that states: "Cannot Use Thunderbolt Accessory - Thunderbolt accessories are not supported on this Mac"

Can somebody help me understand this a bit better ?

Because it's a true statement. The 12" Retina MacBooks are not Thunderbolt capable. The one USB-C port does not support any version of Thunderbolt.

USB-C to Thunderbolt adapters are intended for use with MacBook Pros that have USB-C ports.
