apple watch draining iphone battery
I am updating to 1.0.1 as we speak, but has anyone else noticed that their phone battery drains MUCH faster due to the apple watch? I have a 5S that was often down to 10-20% by the end of the day, but now that I am using the apple watch, the phone will be drained by noon. I constantly need to plug in or use a mophie. Any suggestions? I don't want to turn off too many notifications bc thats the point of the watch. Thanks.
Try to turn off "Show on Lock Screen" for any apps since that lights up the display. Not sure if the proximity sensor prevents that in pocket, though.
Don't think this is the main source of drain, but can be an overlooked one.
Have you checked Settings/General/Usage/Battery Usage and looked at which apps are using the most?
I have an iPhone 6 and find very little drain on my iPhone 6 battery when paired with my watch.
I had the same problem with my iPhone 6 after I paired the Apple Watch which I upgraded to 1.0.1 as soon as I paired.
I found on the web that by unpinning it and pairing it again the issue seemed to be fixed.
I tried - pair/pair - 24 hours ago and it seems the issue has been fixed. I have been monitoring the battery usage in my iPhone to make sure it has been fixed for real.
great!! thanks a lot. I'll give it a try.
I agree - I have an iPhone 6 Plus and do not find an increased drain on my battery because of my iWatch. I'm loving it. Of course it's only three days old.
Take care with Watch apps that might use gps. The problem is that when you launch a Watch app that uses GPS, like the SeaNav or Boat Beacon marine navigation watch apps on your watch, it stays running even when its not showing on the watch face and/or another app (e.g. the clock) is showing. As it is running it will keep asking the iPhone/iPad for gps info which will eat battery on your iPhone/iPad. The solution is to "Force stop" the app on your Watch when you have finished using it. Here's how to do this:- With the gps using app showing on your Watch screen press and hold the side button below the Digital Crown for a few seconds. The next screen you see features buttons for Power Off, Power Reserve and Lock Device. When you see this screen press and hold the side button again until you see app disappear and be replaced by the home screen.
There are more instructions for how to do a force stop here:-

We need a way to exit the SeaNav app on the watch more easily - either from the iPhone or more directly from within the SeaNav app running on the watch or add a button in the app to say "Turn off gps". I hope Apple come up with a more elegant way of managing this (a lot of folks with fitness and cycling apps are complaining to Apple about battery drain on their iPhone) in a future release.
In the mean time I hope that helps explain one major source of battery drain on the Apple Watch - just remember to force quit a gps friendly watchapp when you don't need it running.
Thanks for posting! This is a huge issue with the Apple Watch series 3. With its own cellular and GPS antennas, I’m not sure why it must constantly leaves the GPS on the phone on, despite having all GPS enabled apps closed (on the phone). This is horrible for battery life and has some security implications as well.
There needs to be an easier way to turn on/off gps enabled apps on the watch, and it should ALWAYS, use its own GPS rather than the phones. With a cellular plan on the watch, there’s no need for it to be teathered to the phone at all.
I agree...major problem with series 3 watch. I've only had it a few days but it is a dramatic drain on my phone battery. Seems to defer to the phone rather than relying on wifi or its own cellular signal.
