No audio input/output on macbook air?

Hey all, so this problem began when my audio started to get staticky and make crackling noises while I was playing music, watching videos, etc. Then one day, the audio was completely gone and when I went through the settings it said that I had no output or input devices found. I took my macbook to the Genius Bar where they said that there were no hardware issues, did a NVRAM reset and it worked fine.

I took it home and for a few days it was fine, and then it started acting up again until I lost both input/output for audio. I did a NVRAM reset myself a few times and it worked for a little while. Now, whenever I try to do a NVRAM reset my screen either remains black and flashes randomly, or takes me to a screen where I select a language and then pick whether I want to upload info from time machine, reinstall OSX or check my card for problems. Whereas before when I performed a NVRAM reset I would hear the start up sound, and it would take me to the log in screen and I would go back to normal.

Has anyone ever had a similar issue, or has any ideas as to why this is happening/how I could fix it? Thank you, I appreciate it!!
