How do you unpair a watch that is locked?

I had to wipe my iPhone 5S due to my SIM card not being recognised. I unpaired my Apple Watch 1 using the app on the iPhone. Now my iPhone works but my Apple Watch is locked. The message says "device locked - unlock iPhone to start using Apple Watch". This happened before, when I had to wipe my last phone. It took a few months to fix. A rep in an Apple Store managed to do a factory restore on the watch. He said he pressed both buttons for several seconds while the phone was charging. I have tried that and it hasn't worked. Apple support advised me to contact the reseller because the watch is over a year old. I can do so but would prefer to fix the watch obviously. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Follow these steps to erase your locked watch and pair it with your iPhone:

• Connect your watch to its charging cable, with power connected.
• Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider.
• Press firmly on Power Off (do not try to slide it - just press down more firmly than a normal tap) and then tap on Erase all content and settings.
• Pair your watch using the Watch app on your iPhone, choosing to Restore from Backup if offered the option.
