New hard drive partition takes forever

Hello, I am hoping someone in the Mac world can make ease of this problem I am having.

1st question. Is Mac really picky when it comes to its primary hard drive brand and specs?

Here is what I am experiencing now:

Bought a WD Blue 750GB laptop hard drive 7200RPM t/s.

First thing I did was to boot up the mac hokding apple key + r and select disk utility.

The new hard drive was detected. I clicked on the volume and partitioned it, selected the option Mac OS extended (journaled), put a name for the hard drive, and selected apply.

While partitioning, the progress bar stays half way with no ETA. After 2 hours with no chamge the the progress bar, I quited the disk utility. I reloaded disk utility and there is a partition that shows up under the new HD volume called something like disk1s,  which was not the partition name I have chosen. 

I tried to reinstall or install a new version of Mac OS and no drive was detected. 

Tried erasing the partition, partitioning the volume, and erasing the volume. Also read that I should of selected the option to do GUI partition table or format and again used Mac OS extended (journaled). I tried that way and still no luck. The progress bars stays stuck halfway and keeps on adding time to the ETA of its completion.

Any suggestions or even better a solution would be best?

The first thing I do when purchasing a new hard drive is to completely wipe the drive (uppermost icon in Disk Utility) and format OS Extended (Journaled). This will also erase any unnecessary drivers and software installed on the disk.

Creating a partition should not take any time at all.

I already tried selecting the whole volume of the hard drive, not the parition. Select the erase tab, format: Mac OS extended (journaled), named the hard drive,  security options set as "fastest" and select the erase button.  progress bar is stuck halfway and approx. Is 4 hours..

It sounds like there's a problem with that drive, suggest you return it.
