"infs" popup on startup
I am getting a popup when I start up that says this-"infs" is a Unix application downloaded from the internet. Are you sure you want to open it? I can't locate this application anywhere (downloads, applications) to remove it, does anyone know what this is and how to delete it?
Restart your system, in the dialog box that appears, deselect 'Reopen windows when logging back in', and restart.
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups; select your account; select tab Login Items. Do you find it in that list?
Open System Preferences > Extensions. Do you find it in that list?
Open Finder, hold down the Option (alt) key, then choose Go > Library from the text menu. Find map LaunchAgents and open it, do you find it in that map?
The following locations can have the item as well but be sure you know what you're doing when removing stuff in these locations:
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartUpItems
Look for it using Easy Find.
Tried East Find but it couldn't find it. I'm guessing it's an application that was downloaded but hasn't been installed yet? Not sure.
Hello wilkiedon,
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what apps are attempting to load at startup. Download EtreCheck from https://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.
Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.
Restart your system, in the dialog box that appears, deselect 'Reopen windows when logging back in', and restart.

I don't find it on my computer. I'm just guessing but it may mean "installed filesystem." Have no idea what is calling it nor why.
If it is downloaded from the Internet then it is something you installed or it was installed by something you installed. Check Users & Groups preferences to see what is in Login Items. Look for it in:
/Home/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents/ and LaunchDaemons/
/System/Library/Extensions/
Oh, and add /Library/StartUpItems/. Anything in that folder should be removed. It is no longer used or is deprecated.
My solution: it was a file in the User Launch Agents folder. I am not sure which plist, but I think it was the lovable Adobe Updater plist…:-)
I encountered this problem. After trying the suggestions here, it still persisted. This is what I did to resolve it.
While the popup window is still open, launch Activity Monitor.
In Activity Monitor, find the infs process and click Inspect.
Click Open Files and Ports
Find the directory that the process is located in. Mine was:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/
Delete the folder in this directory that contains the process and associated files.
Also, do as others have suggested and remove it from your Startup Items in the Users and Groups Preferences.
Hope this helps somebody.
I have the exact same problem and after looking at genesiscomputer's reply, I tried using the activity monitor and it says the file is located in /private/var/folders/ etc....
I can't even find that folder but it seems you shouldn't manually delete files in that folder.
Shouldn't these files be located in the same location for all users? I'm now wondering where wilkiedon's file is located.
OS 10.7.5 Per your suggestion, I opened finder/Library/Launch Agents. I then found again, the only related item that I've had recent trouble removing. It was "amchelper" and related. Which I used Activity Monitor to Inspect and then to Quit it. "Advanced Mac Cleaner" along with "Mac File Opener", most of which I was able to locate and remove earlier. So finding what hopefully is the last shred of "abc", will remove "infs" as well. The 'infs' has been difficult to find. I Haven't checked yet but thank you for your help. I'm feeling pretty sure but will let all know only, if I was not successful.
We had the exact same problem, and we were able to eliminate it. The problem was a helper app from the adware program "Advanced Mac Cleaner".
Open a terminal (run the Terminal app in the /Applications/Utilities folder).
In the terminal, type:
ls ~/Library/Application\ Support/
to list the directory contents. We had two unwanted folders inside of ~/Library/Application Support named:
amc
Advanced Mac Cleaner
To remove them, you probably need to be an Administrator. Type:
sudo rm -Rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Advanced\ Mac\ Cleaner/
When it prompts you for a password, enter your login password. That will remove the first folder. Now do the same for the second folder. Type:
sudo rm -Rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/amc/
Now when we reboot, we no longer get that annoying pop-up message! Hope this solution works for you, too.
Note: If you have a different variant on the same problem, try this. The way we figured out the path to the culprit app was to type the following command in the terminal:
ps -A | grep infs
I did this to get all of these things to stop popping up when I booted, followed these directions exactly in terminal, and somehow it uninstalled Mac OS X and I cannot get it reinstalled! Do you know what I did wrong?
