External startup drive

My iMac with 1TB SSD is out of space.  Can I use an external Thunderbolt drive as a startup drive? Or, how can I make space on my SSD?  Where are iPhoto files kept?

If you want to delete photos from iPhoto. You should do that from with the iPhoto App. If you try to do that through the finder, it will break your iPhoto library.

Can your computer run 10.12?

If so, have you considered upgrading to 10.12 and using using iCloud Photo Library?

All your compatible apple devices can use the same iCloud Photo Library. And you don't have to worry about drive failure, computer theft, or running out of space because your Photo Library has gotten too big. Because your Photo Library will live in the cloud.

What about an external startup drive, maybe Thunderbolt?

Yes, you can use any external drive as a startup drive. If you never changed the default location of your iPhotos library (you should update it to Photos!!!) please refer to

We have no idea what version of iPhoto you use so it's tough to say. What I'd do rather than using an external drive as your startup (expensive and unnecessary) is I'd get a USB External Hard Disk and store your large libraries (photos, music & movies) on the External Hard Disk.
