smtp servers keep going off

I have had ongoing problems sending e-mail from my laptop. 

When I look at my accounts, it shows that the outgoing servers (smtp) are all "offline" -- yet I'm getting new e-mail without any problems.

This thread (on the second page) had useful information -- basically, quit Mail, open your Keychain and delete all of your smtp server info, then reopen Mail and re-enter your passwords, etc if you don't have them saved.

My smtp servers then appeared to be "online" but e-mail wasn't going out.  It's just sitting in my Outbox.  And then I get the dreaded "can't send using abc.example.com server"

Thoughts?
