idiots guide to cloning corrupt drive ?

So my MacBook Pro won't boot up anymore it shuts down when the grey progress bar gets about half way through the white screen with the apple logo. I've started up in recovery mode and have access to the disk utility. I tried first aid on the drive and it says cannot be fully verified please backup files.

Can anyone explain to me in the simplest of ways how to do this ? I've searched online but it didn't make much sense and all the videos I saw were an older version of OSX. I have a 2tb external USB drive that I can copy the current 500gb drive to.
