QuickTime freezing when using USB

I'm using the Apple USB-C AV adapter with HDMI, USB-A, USB-C. Have a projector plugged into the HDMI port on the adapter. Video clips are on an external USB-A drive. Every time I launch a video in QT it starts playing as usual but then QT becomes unresponsive. Spinning beachball etc. I've used these videos for a long time without problems. When the system is running on its own without the connection to the projector I have zero problems. This only happens when I'm using the adapter and connected via HDMI. I thought maybe the issue was plugging the external drive and HDMI into the adapter at the same time. So I used a separate USB-A to USB-C adapter for the drive. Got the exact same result.

So my question: Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? Is the AV adapter buggy in general or is it possible mine just need to be replaced? OR... are there QT prefs somewhere that I should trash? I'm not sure where they are anymore.
