Finder Sidebar Continually Removes Desktop Shor...

In the Finder sidebar where the list of folders is, my Desktop folder continually disappears, every single day, multiple times per day.

I go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and RE-Check the box for Desktop, and within an hour or so, it again vanished from my finder sidebar. This has been happening for months now...no matter what I've tried, I cannot get the Desktop folder to stay in the list.

From your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and move these files to your Desktop:

com.apple.finder.plist

com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Then, restart, or log out and in again.

(You will have to reset some finder prefs the way you like them.)

Thanks! Giving that a shot now, will follow up if it doesn't resolve!

I am thinking this is a Sierra 10.12.2 bug. It didn't exist in 10.12.0, or 10.12.1. Followed your suggestion (had no sidebarlists.plist), made the fix in Finder Preferences, and the sidebar showed Desktop in an open Finder window.

On reboot, Desktop is missing from the Sidebar panel again, but if I launch Pages to a File Chooser, the Desktop appears in that panel's Favorites. This is true for other applications (e.g. Preview, etc.).

The Desktop is missing from the Favorites panel when one launches the file chooser as an NSOpenPanel from Swift, or Python code.

FWIW, I have 10.12.2 installed on 4 macs and the Desktop icon has never disappeared from the Sidebar for me. So not so sure it's a bug.

Well, I can't shake the problem here on my MacBook Air. Sometimes it will stick until a reboot, other times it will disappear after the initial Finder window is closed. Been to Safe Boot, removed Library/Caches folder, and on reboot, I cannot make the Desktop selection stick in the Favorites panel.

I have booted into Recovery, and run Disk First Aid. Ran DiskWarrior to rebuild the Desktop catalog. Problem existed before, and after.

It doesn't really surprise me. I've seen a problem on occasion like the spell checker offering non-words as a correction on 4 Macs + 2 iPads plus a user who posted about the problem, yet leroydouglas can't replicate the problem on his. Sometimes it seems it's the "computer gods" at work.

Just to add, I don't really think there are "computer gods" but I do believe certain models, years and configurations of Macs along with software and other hardware can cause a problem no one else sees. Which of course makes it nearly impossible to track down.

One's installation experience is based on the make and model of Mac, and the current gravitation flux in the vicinity. I didn't realize how much I used the Favorites Desktop icon until it went missing in my upgrade from 10.12.1 to 10.12.2 — on my MBA.

Hmm, never had Sidebar remove aliases. Could be specific to your hardware? I'm working on a 2010 iMac with 10.12.2 and I still have both my Finder prefs same as always.

Well, it's not just computers of course. I've had my router act up for no apparent reason until I reset it, my Smart TV suddenly refused to connect to the network for a week then just mysteriously started again, my DVR will suddenly slow the interface down until I reboot it. I used to sell audio and we sold the first all digital receiver and it would turn itself on and off and change channels in a narrow temperature range. My poor g/f at the time wouldn't go into our apt. because the stereo decided to turn itself on and she thought someone had broken into the house. Sometimes problems can be caused by noise in the AC line. It's an adventure sometimes.

I had a very old PowerMac with infra-red and a remote. Every night I'd turn off the Mac, get into bed, pull the covers up and turn on the TV. Then, the Mac would boot and I'd have to jump out of bed to shut it off. I didn't suspect the remote IR because the TV was on the opposite side of the room. But the IR signal was bouncing off a mirror and back to the Mac. The inelegant solution was a piece of tape over the IR receiver on the Mac.

Well, I occasionally pair a 12" 2015 MacBook to my home audio system. We were watching a movie on TV and suddenly the receiver decided to pair itself with my MacBook which was three rooms away which cut off the TV audio. I had to go shutdown the MacBook to get TV audio back.

I have the same problem. tried to remove the library files and restart, still have the problem.

Hope we can hear back from Apple soon

Problem solved, thank you!
