How can I delete all of the songs off of my iTu...

This is my issue,

     I had imported a bunch of songs onto my MacBook Pro. I then imported the songs into my iPod. However, I did not want the songs to stay on my MacBook and so, I tried to delete them. When I checked the iPod, all the songs I had previously imported disappeared. I figured that if I were to delete the songs on iTunes, it then also deletes the songs off of the iPod. Is there any way to avoid deleting the songs off of the iPod when I want to delete the songs off of the MacBook after I've imported the songs into the iPod?
