HDDs for Mac Pro 2010 Server

I am setting up a central file server on which I'll store all my work, other files and backups of my 5 x macs.

My work files are multi-layered psds, and I also do a lot of 3d rendering and want a central storage point for all my textures etc.

I want to be able to open files on individual macs across the network, and work on them across the network, I don't want to have to copy a bunch of files over to an individual mac, do the work, then copy them back.

I will be using Mac OSX Server.

I was thinking I could use the 4 x internal drive bays to set up a RAID 10 system, probably 4 x 6GB drives, striped and mirrored.

Will this setup be fast enough? I have a colleague who has set up something similar but he uses an external Thunderbolt array with a Mac Pro 6.1. He also uses a gigabit switch and link aggregation. He says it all works well and is fast.
