itunes dont show my devices

when i plug the charging cord into the usb port on my lap top none of my devices show up

Hi Jeremy,

I have updated itunes to latest software i have updated my phone to latest software. i restarted the laptop. I followed all instructions and yet the device is still not showing in itunes. I need to back up. please assist.
