WatchOS 4 playback controls not working

Ever since upgrading to WatchOS 4, I can't get the playback controls on my watch to pause or play my podcasts or skip forward/backward (or change playback speed). The buttons are right there on my watch and they appear to respond to my presses, but nothing happens with the podcast when i press them. The volume still works on the watch though.  I have tried restarting phone and watch, to no avail.  What can I do?
