Mail fails to go after restore from time machine

Got new iMac, did restore backup from time capsule, all works but Mail. Says needs to reindex, but when starts next screen says home folder is full, but machine is new and only partly used. Cannot reset mail as every time it only wants to restore. If setup up new user, can get mail to work but it cannot access the old backup on time capsule. Cannot find any library with a folder mail on the machine.
