Photos App. Trying to free up iMac space by mov...

I moved all my photos from the Photos app and dragged them on to my external hardrive. It took a while but they are all on there (328GB), under "Photos Library"

I then deleted all the photos from my Photos app on my iMac to free up space. Great - lots of space now!

But, then I open my external hardrive again and double click on my "Photos Library" which then opens the Photos app but gives me a blank screen saying "upload photos"

Have I now lost all my 45,000 Memories?

BTW - I went on to Photos Preferences and then selected "use as system photos library" - this gave me some photos for some reason but a tiny amount....

Please can someone let me know what I'm doing wrong? I just want to be able to move my photos onto my External Hardrive and be able to view them off that. Not just clogging up my iMac.

Is that external drive attached directly to your mac or is it a network attached storage?
