ipad battery runs down to zero charge

ipad battery occasionally runs down to zero charge overnight if not plugged in when it was nearly fully charged that night. when reviewing usage it shows no apps were used in last 12 hours. so why is it running down? after recharging it seems to run fine and charge normally for a couple weeks. then it happens again.
