Painfully slow music sync on Apple Watch

I just bought a new Series 3 (though I'd assume this issue applies to all Watches) and it takes forever to sync just a few albums and playlists! Some longer (e.g. 200 tracks) playlists weren't finished transferring after a whole night. Some albums have been stuck updating for a day or two now.

Am I doing something wrong? Are there any tricks or workarounds anyone knows of for this? This seems incredibly flakey and unstable.

From what I understand, it's using Bluetooth to sync. Why?! If the watch has to be docked in order to sync, power consumption shouldn't be an issue, so it should surely be using Wifi and be fast! I've tried switching my iphone to the 2G house wifi network too, since I read watch doesn't use 5G, but this made no difference.

I bought the Watch for running, and getting music on it is less reliable / functional than my 10 year old ipod Nano.

Hope someone has some advice
