How do I restore files or system from disk image?

My Macbook (late 2011 running OS X Sierra 10.12.6) was freezing on boot-up about 2/3 of the way according to the apple screen progress bar. I was able to fix it by reinstalling OS X with Disk Utilities in Recovery mode.  At the time, I'd found some instructions online explaining how to back up the computer with a disk image made in utility and then restore it from that image (for some reason I had no Time Machine backups despite the fact that I thought I should.) As it turned out, all of my programs and files were still there and everything ran fine, so I didn't need the disk image.

A few months later, the computer froze again, doing the same thing. This time, it would not reinstall the OS, but kept giving me an error message. I decided it would probably be better to wipe this computer and start fresh, something I'd been meaning to do anyway. But once again, there were no  Time Machine backups despite the fact that I could swear I turned Time Machine on. Unable to find the same instructions I used last time, I nevertheless made a disk image in Recovery mode, then wiped the computer and installed Sierra again. It is now running fine. I went into disk utility to restore from the disk image, but it would not allow me to do so. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the exact error message was. I have found instructions in various places, but nothing that makes it clear to me what to do in my situation. I'm wondering whether I should not have gone through the set-up process once the new OS was installed, but gone straight to recovery mode and used the disk image then.

I would like to restore the computer from the disk image so that everything works as it did before. But I am afraid that if I do this, whatever corruption was causing my problem before will still be there. Can anyone tell me whether this is likely?

If I can't or shouldn't restore the whole system, I would at least like to recover a few things that I don't have duplicated elsewhere. How can I do this? Or is it even possible to restore individual files from a disk image? I tried opening the image in Finder, but it was taking a very long time to verify and I don't even know what will happen if I do get it open.
