bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

I have a new macbook pro 15 with an i7 processor and I am commonly getting this error with a huge number of systems hangs.

bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

The bash command is serving as a way of me seeing that the underlying computer is running at a maximum number of processes 366.  I am running quite a large number of firefox tabs and other applications but nothing out of the ordinary for a computer of this power.  It results in every time I load a new firefox tab the whole computer hangs from around 5-10 seconds.  It's really awful to use.

I have never seen this error before, but i have no idea how to fix it without restarting my mac.  It seems like a really arbitrary error and i'd prefer to allow my mac to run many more processes rather than block me.

How can I fix this issue without restarting my computer?

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
