Recovering a backup

After I updated my MacBook Air to Sierra, my MacBook became incredibly laggy and the fan would run high even when I wasn't running any programs. I saught help and it was apparently an issue with FileVault encrypting, so I waited for 2 days and nothing changed. So I tried to decrypt FileVault and it was stuck paused trying to decrypt the files. Since I had my pictures on a backup which was all I cared about, I decided to do a factory reset of my MacBook. My bad, that's where things went wrong.

Even when trying to upload a new OS to the MacBook, it won't complete and fails halfway through. I had an external backup from another MacBook in my home and when I tried to use that backup to install onto the MacBook, it says the restore process has failed.

I'm at my wits end here and I know for a fact that there is nothing wrong with the notebook itself, I was just unsatisfied with the results from the sierra update and wanted to go back. Do I have any other options or do I have to make a genius appointment?

Install Sierra or El Capitan from Scratch

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  3. When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
  4. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  5. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  6. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  8. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

This will erase everything on the disk prior to installing a fresh copy of OS X.
