How can I stop a new blank Finder window from p...

If I have no Finder windows open but I just want to return to the Finder to do something else, is there a way of preventing it always popping up a new blank window which I only have to immediately shut again?

Just click anywhere on your Desktop to make Finder frontmost.

Another thing you might be able to do:  But maybe use command-tab?  (I can't test this properly because I have multiple desktops and many finder windows going.)

Also, if you use multiple desktops, and you have "When switching to an application..." in System Preferences, Mission control unchecked, then you can get the behavior you want in a desktop with no open windows.

Hi Richard:

The first thing to do is check how you have Finder setup.

Right click (secondary click) on Finder.

Make sure you have Desktop selected and under Options "None".

Then check Finder preferences. Start Finder and from top menu select Finder Preferences.

Ensure you have it set to "New Finder windows show:" Desktop.

Hope this helps,

Hi Kim

This sounds like what I'm looking for, but I don't have 'Options' listed when I right click Finder...

What do you show under Finder Preferences in top menu bar?

Kim

Try it here:

Note:  you need to be on the Desktop before going to the Finder menu.
