What's wrong with my iMac ?

Hello, I have a late 2009 iMac 27inch core i7, 2TB.. hard drive I have the newest update OS (sierra)

and it just started running usually slow.

I just upgraded the RAM from 8gb to 16gb thinking that was going to fix the problem.

But it didn't,

I only use the computer strictly for Logic Pro X.

I don't multitask. And have multiple apps and what not open.

But prior to opening logic the computer is still slow. Like when you first turn it on, it takes a while to load the desktop files and dock apps. I basically just see my background image for about  a minute.

Some more info that might help:

My hard drive is no where near full. I believe I have 1.78tb free of 2tb.

When I check activity mon, I only see "bird" and "cloudd" doing any sort of activity every minute or so. About 40-50%

The computer almost constantly sounds like its reading something. The best was I can describe the sound is..it sounds like its stomach is growling..

Sometimes the computer would randomly shut off after I just turned it on and then when I goto start it again it would give me an error saying an error occurred and then a whole bunch of Chinese letters on the bottom.

That's as much as I can think of right now,

But any help would be greatly appreciated.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been, and describe your observations in a reply to this Discussion.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

Please post an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it as your reply to this post.

BTW, you should offload your large libraries (likely your photos, music, movies) to an external HD. This is simple to do and could help the performance. Your HD is too full!

OP say 1.7TB free on a 2TB drive.

Whoops, my bad!

Definitely do what rfkaufmann87 suggested and download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.
