Upgrading To New iMac

I’m purchasing a new iMac and I need some advice on the best way to copy my files from my old iMac. Currently I have a 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5 running system 10.9.5.

I know about migration assistant and have used that in the past. However, it’s been awhile since I’ve upgraded. I seem to remember having issues when transferring all the files at once to a newer system using migration assistant. I’ve also done upgrades in the past where I’ve just copied and installed all my programs to the new mac and while taking much longer, my new mac had less issues then just copying everything at once. Things just seemed to run better that way. I’m sorry that I can’t be too specific on exactly what happened since it was a few years ago. If I go the migration assistant route, any problems when I try to boot up my apps? Will I have to reinstall them again if it’s an app that requires a serial number?

Any tips on the best method on making the move would be appreciated. Thanks for the support!

Not all serial numbers accompany your apps, some are tied to the device they are registered on initially

Make a backup of your current iMac. See note regarding type of back up to use from Luis Sequeira1

Copy your serial numbers of your current apps (particularly Adobe), MS may be a problem, too.
