Auto unlock Mac from iPhone?

Can I auto unlock a Mac from my iPhone, similar to auto unlock from an iWatch?  If so, how?  If not, why not?

I have tried several third party unlocking tools (NearLock, MacID and FingerKey).  They kind of work, but the bluetooth connection between Mac and iPhone is hard to establish, and keeps dropping out.

As I understand it, auto unlock from iWatch uses "continuity", which doesn't require full bluetooth recognition between the devices.  E.g. "universal clipboard" works between my Mac and my iPhone without any bluetooth setup. Can this be used to enable auto unlocking from iPhone?
