Uninstall Yahoo Powered Search

I have read other answers but I am not getting what I need.

Somehow, I ended up installing this Yahoo Powered Search.  It was making my search engine run Yahoo rather than Google.  I fixed that problem, and only Google runs as my search engine.  Yay for me!

Every so many days, this window pops up that says a software update is required,

An upgraded version of Yahoo Powered Search is now available. Set Yahoo as your homepage and default search on all of your compatible browsers and receive applicable updates from time to time.

By clicking "OK" you agree to install the above and have read and agree to the Yahoo Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

I click on Not Now, it asks me Sure you want to leave? Yahoo Powered Search is only a click away from being up to date. Skipping on this update might prevent you from enjoying the latest Yahoo Powered Search features and fixes, that will improve your Yahoo experience.  I can then click on Skip or Update.  I click Skip and it closes.

I want to uninstall this so I quit getting this pop-up.  I have gone to Safari>Preferences>Extensions and I do not have any extensions.  I have read in other responses this is a way to remove it.

I am on a MacBook Air from mid 2011, running macOS Sierra V 10.12.5.  Safari is V 10.1.1.  Any help removing this Yahoo Powered Search would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have adware install on your MBA. Try Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac

Try going to Safari/Preferences/Extensions and disable all extensions. Quit Safari, reopen, and see if the website will now load. If so, enable extensions one or two at a time until you find which extension is causing the problem.

Thanks for the reply, Eric, but as I stated, I have no extensions under Safari>Preferences>Extensions, so there is nothing to disable.

Thanks for the reply, Allan.  I do believe it is an adware.  However, I was hoping to remove it without installing another program to search and remove stuff.  I will see if any others have a removal method without installing something.  If not, I will consider your suggestion.  I have read pages suggesting a removal tool, but I never know how legit the posts or tools are, so I am leery.

If that problem is indeed adware installed on your Mac, you don't have to install anything more to get rid of it. You will need to provide some additional information though, so that you can identify what to get rid of and how to get rid of it. Start below.

Navigate to the following folder, and post its contents in a screenshot.

~/Library/LaunchAgents

To open that folder, copy the entire line above and paste it in the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field. It should look like this:

gt.png

Take a screenshot showing all that folder's contents, and post it in a reply. To take a screenshot read the Appendix in the following User Tip: Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question.

There will be additional instructions to follow.

For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. You may also wish to read Beware bogus Adobe Flash "installers" which lead down the same path. The only way to prevent installing adware is its recognition and avoidance.

Review your Gatekeeper settings: OS X : About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. Gatekeeper is designed to help prevent you from inadvertently installing garbage software.

Removing adware manually involves identifying the root cause. Look first at the property list files you find in

~/Library/LaunchAgents

/Library/LaunchAgents

/Library/LaunchDaemons

Look for the program arguments inside that tell you what their executing.

I wrote up a fuller procedure here: https://applehelpwriter.com/2017/06/07/how-to-remove-adware-from-your-mac/

This was perfect and helped greatly. Found stuff that Malwarebytes didn't.

If you don't mind me asking, what was found that Malwarebytes didn't detect?

The problem with handling this manually is that you may mistakenly delete things you think are malware but aren't.

If you know what you are doing, then it is fine; but there is a risk that something will break sometime in the near or not-so-near future... at the very least you should make a note of what you deleted.

Same here. I have an iMac 3.2Ghz 27" (2015). It's extremely annoying. Yahoo should be sued over this. IMO.
