How to Disable iTunes helper

I don't need my iPod to auto-start iTunes when I plug it in at work. I'm trying to streamline my system a bit and want to disable the iTunes helper process. I removed it from my Login items via the Accounts control panel but it keeps re-appearing. Any thoughts?

PPC G5, 10.4.11 & iTunes 9.0.2

that might not be a good idea.

instead, if you haven't done so, disable +open iTunes when this iPod is attached+ in the summary tab of the device

Any reason why? I read around and it seems that it's only purpose is to open iTunes when an iPod is attached.

it's part of the system software, IMHO, and you meddle with the system at your own peril.

what of my suggestion ?

Well, I'm not really concerned about it opening iTunes when I attach my iPod.
I want to axe it all together as it is always running in the background.

maybe if you completely uninstall iTunes that'll fix you up.

however, from your profile i gather you have plenty of computing power so i really don't understand. on my MBP, in activity monitor, iTunes helper uses 3.4 MB real memory, on my PB G4 a mere 2.4 MB.

so, what gives ?

Do I need a reason to want to get rid of unnecessary process? As I mentioned, I'm streamlining. It is just another think running that is sapping some (though very little) processing power from my system. And I've read of other people's experiences where it has caused problems with system stability. Granted, they are a small minority, but if it is something I don't need, and could maybe be a future issue, then why not remove it. I looked around my system and spotlight doesn't turn up the application file, just its plist.

I use iTunes so no, that won't fix me up. Thanks for your feedback though.

Henny Youngman had an old joke: "Doctor, it hurts when I do this." "Well, don't do that!" I wonder if we can get an answer to this question that isn't like that

For me (read "me" as "one account on a shared mac, often used with fast user switching"), I simply do not want iTunes to auto-launch under any circumstances whatsoever. Because I never want to hit "decline" again.

(Now, for you Henny Youngmans out there who say I'm crazy or wrong or it's good for me, I present this. https://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/getamac/apple-getamac-security_480x376.m ov )

I know this much: If I kill my user's instance of iTunesHelper.app, the problem goes away. So how do I prevent it from launching in the first place?
For this user/account. (other accounts should act normally.)

Thank you Wolf.

Now, Spotlight is not "allowing" me to see the iTunesHelper.app. Do you happen to remember where it was before you put it out of it's misery?

I didn't delete the executable (my other 'users' need it). I killed the process.

$ kill `ps -x | grep iTunesHelper | grep -v grep | cut -c 1-5`

Of course, you can't issue that command until you've logged in as that user, and it can only kill an iTunesHelper that's already launched, which means iTunesHelper will have already launched iTunes. So, "barn door after the horses have left". Pretty useless. I still need a real answer.

that's not correct. iTunes helper will be launched at startup, whether iTunes i running or not, but you can kill it any time by launching +activity monitor+, selecting the process and clicking +quit process+

I was going to ask, but saw that last paragraph. You can also kill it from Activity Monitor. Since it launches on boot, iTunes doesn't have to have launched for it to be running. So, you did that in Terminal? Just type that in and hit return?

Edit: Ah, I see JollyGiant was letting you know the same thing while I typed.

Well, got off the phone with Apple, looks like my phone is bricked. Off to the Apple Store.

That's relevant to this conversation because the Restore failed at exactly the same time as an undesired second instance of iTunes had started up. Perhaps it polled the phone, found it mid-restore, and interrupted it.

Now you know why this is an important question.

Jolly, if you don't have specific answers for this specific problem, you should probably move on. At this point you're only contributing opinions which are not advancing a solution.

Sorry to hear about your phone, any luck with it?

Still waiting to see if someone has an answer for this...

Never got a good answer for this, but marking it answered to close out this thread.
