Reinstall a new copy of OS X

I tried to reinstall a new copy of OS X because High Sierra wasn't working well however when It asks me to choose a disk it doesn't come up with any disk but my computer can still turn on!!

This may be a glitch with the High Sierra installer looking for a HFS+ formatted drive. If you already had installed High Sierra the drive is already formatted APFS.

So we started off with OS X Mountain Lion and wanted to use the new version of Skype for this we needed to update the computer OS. Once we updated to OS X High Sierra We were experiencing problems such being considerably slower and constantly asking for password when turning on even though It has been turned off in preferences. Now we have decided to redownload the original OS X from the computer by shutting down the computer then turning it on while pressing Alt+Command+R but there is no disk to select when it asked us for the disk we need to put the OS X on. Also, I am not sure what HFS+ is and what APFS.
