2008 MacBook, how to install OSX without discs

Here's the situation: I had a 2008 MacBook that was a mess.  A few months ago I got a new iMac and it's doing great.  I wanted to blank the MacBook to use for some real light duty stuff.  Just, erase everything, reinstall the OS, and only have a couple of applications on it.  I had Yosemite running on it.  I booted in "Internet Recovery Mode," and chose the "Reinstall OS" option and got a clean install... but it still had all the old stuff (apps, documents, preferences) on it.  I thought it was going to wipe everything in order to install the OS.  So I went back to Recovery Mode and erased the hard drive.  Here's the dumb part, I didn't know if a clean install was part of that, and I was curious, so rather than choosing to reinstall the OS again, I restarted, just to see.  Got the "folder with a flashing question mark" screen.  No problem, I'll just boot in Internet Recovery Mode again... Uh oh, still the same "?" screen.  I don't have a clue where my install discs from nine years ago are.  I thought maybe I could download Yosemite on my iMac and make a bootable USB thumb drive installer... nope.  Can't download Yosemite on the iMac because it's too old for that computer (even if I'm not planning to install it there).

So any suggestions for legally installing an OS that will run on this old machine? It should even run anything up through El Cap.

Thanks!

John
