Backup drive requires repeated cleanup

Hi all! I'm running a Freecom Classic 2 320GB mobile drive via USB 2.0 to backup my Mac, which is a late 2013 21.5 inch 2.7GHz model running OSX Sierra.

I keep very little on it so there's only about 100 GB used, and every so often I'll backup onto the usb drive by dragging folders to it and updating - again there's really only about 60Gb used on the flash drive.

I have two problems: firstly every time I access the backup drive the folder contents - NOT the folders - are all over the place, mixed up and on top of each other until I select the 'clean up' option and then they all conform to their original position. Some of them are no longer in icon view and have to have the settings reselected to allow this.

Why does this happen every time? How do I cure it?

Secondly if I very occasionally use this drive to copy items from my Mac to my Windows 10 PC the PC tells me 'there is a problem with this disc' and then proceeds to 'repair' it, or appears to - nothing ever seems to change. It's primarily used on my Mac, though, and between two usages the folders will change content position and view as if never corrected.

It seems like a basic problem but is very annoying each time.... any thoughts?
