macOS Sierra OS Image

Hi Group!

If this isn't the spot for this post, please let us know. We have a master iMac 5k image (.DMG) which includes OS, Applications and user settings. The image has macOS Sierra 10.12.4 on it. We would like to upgrade the OS on the image to the latest, 10.12.6 for use with our other sites. We do not have an iMac 5k readily available to copy the image to, to update, and then re-image. Is there a way to update the image without the physical computer it was created on? Any tricks? Thanks!

FWIW, I for one don't think it's possible without Sierra actually running. Perhaps someone else knows something I don't know.

An image file cannot be upgraded in the same way as a disk drive unless you mount the image on the disk drive and upgrade it, then reimage the upgraded image. You can directly reimage an already upgraded computer.

You can create a bootable installer package which offers the ease of replacing anything in the package then re-compiling the installer with the new package content. The new installer can then be distributed however you wish.

You can also use a NAS solution.
