Apple Watch battery charging issue?

Hello my Apple Watch doesn’t charge anymore it would be connected to the charger all day to find out it never got any juice. I took it to the Apple store and one from the bright geniuses told me that I would have to replace the entire unit because the unit doesn’t charge properly. Charging me $280!! For that I would buy a new one. What I don’t understand is that I’ve had multiple people tell me the same thing happened to here Apple Watch. Why hasn’t Apple addressed this? My sister and I got our Apple watches the same day and the same thing happened to the both of the watches. This is obvious a manufacturing defect
